LITERATURE

 

This year the 7th/8th Grade Explorers classes will read the following books (click on the title to see the reading schedule and journal assignments), including:

  

• Student choice for Banned Book Project

• Lord of the Flies

• Sherlock Holmes short stories

• Edgar Allan Poe stories

• Miss Peregirne's Home for Peculiar Children

 

Students learn to analyze literature and make connections beyond the book.  We do NOT do book reports!  Rather, students engage the text and try to make sense about what the author has to say.

 

WRITING

 

Students write nearly every day.  From informal daily journal entries to formal essay and creative pieces, students learn the fundamentals of communicating through the written word.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

 

In 7th/8th Grade Explorers our study of Social Studies is closely linked to the books we are reading.  Some of the topics we will cover are:

 

• Book Banning and the First Amendment

• Community Issues projects

• Landmark Supreme Court cases

• American history

• Current World Problems

• Pacific Northwest History
