What We Do
In Explorers students pursue the study of subjects to a deeper level and at an accelerated pace. Explorers uses the Project Based Learning model (see below).
Who We Are
Pioneer Middle School Explorers is taught by Dan Calzaretta. Dan sees himself not as the traditional "teacher" but rather as a mentor, coach, support person, and project facilitator. Dan helps those in his class move from the traditional notion of a "student" to someone who takes control of the learning process. Students are highly involved in what happens in the Explorers classroom. And, Explorers have a lot of fun!
Project Based Learning (PBL)
The PBL model is build on the idea that students learn best by tackling real-world problems. Researchers have found several elements of successful PBL programs:
-
students take on realistic problems
-
students have increased control over his/her learning
-
teachers serve as coaches and facilitators of inquiry and reflection
-
students work collaboratively
-
students use current technology (we are very lucky to have a classroom set of iPads as well, several Mac Minis, and film making equipment)
