6th Grade Explorers

LITERATURE

 

In 6th Grade Explorers we read several novels throughout the year (click on the title to see the reading schedule and journal assignments), including:

 

• A Wrinkle in Time (as part of our Banned Books project)

• The Giver

• The Age of Miracles

• Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

 

Students learn to analyze literature and make connections beyond the book.  We do NOT do book reports!  Rather, students engage the text and try to make sense about what the author has to say.

 

WRITING

 

Students write nearly every day.  From informal daily journal entries to formal essay and creative pieces, students learn the fundamentals of communicating through the written word.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

 

In 6th Grade Explorers we begin our exploration of history with ancient civilizations, including:

 

• emergence of the human race

• Aboriginal peoples of the South Pacific

• ancient Egypt

• ancient Greece

• ancient India

• Roman Empire
